Job Summary

The Director of Digital Media reports to the Managing Director and may serve:depending upon qualifications:as a member of the BYUBs Producers Group. The Director of Digital Media is two primary responsibilities: Software Engineering and Technical Operations. The Director of Digital Media manages the digital media team, which is responsible for design, development and maintenance of all BYUB software applications, including the BYUtv and BYUradio websites and apps, as well as internal custom applications and system integrations. The Director of Digital Media also manages the Technical Operations team, which consists of IT, Broadcast and Production Engineering who are responsible for the day to day operations of all IT and broadcast networks and equipment. The Director of Digital Media is responsible for BYUBs digital strategies and management of the technical infrastructure of BYU Broadcasting, including all software and equipment necessary for the distribution of television, radio, and digital media to a global audience.

Essential Functions

1. Technical Strategic Leadership
Depending on qualifications, may serve as a member of the BYUB Executive Management Team
Articulate and help define BYUB digital distribution strategy
Define the overall technical platforms for internal and external media distribution
This position is actively involved in the annual university resource planning process which identifies and presents organizational priorities and budget requirements for future years
Create and manage internal digital media and engineering group budgets
Establish annual budgets for equipment infrastructure, software development and IT services (ITI/ITS/ITD)
Review and approve all ITI/ITS/ITD project invoices
Prioritize digital media and broadcast engineering projects
Maintain 24/7 state of the art operability of existing systems
Seek innovative software solutions that enable business strategies

2. Digital Media Application Platform Design, Development, and Deployment
Establish software functional requirements
Design user interface and user experience for BYUB media applications (tv and radio)
Work with internal dev team and third parties to develop software applications for web, mobile and OTT streaming platforms (iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox, Chromecast)
Work closely with department managers and programmers to ensure digital strategies meet organizational goals
Manage external contractors on the design, development, and maintenance of all BYUB digital activities, including websites, apps, live streams, video and audio on demand content, social media integrations, analytics, and all other digital initiatives
Build software stack on combination of on premise and cloud (AWS) infrastructure
Publish applications on BYUB owned and third:party platforms, including iTunes, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, and Microsoft app stores
Negotiate contracts and maintain relationships with key technology partners, including Ooyala, Akamai, Apple, Microsoft, Roku, Amazon, Depth Interactive, etc.
Develop new strategies for utilizing BYUB digital media to increase distribution of BYUtv and BYUradio
Research and stay current on emerging technologies and digital distribution channels
Ensure that all digital content reflects the high standard of technical excellence associated with BYU Broadcasting, the University and the Church

3. Manage Full Time Employees
Provide vision and establish strategy for software engineering team
Provide vision, support and lead development of a strategy for the broadcast engineering team
Meet regularly with teams, evaluate performance, and provide feedback
Hire full:time employee and oversee hiring and training of student staff
Provide annual personnel reviews and create Performance and Development Plans for each FTE
