This is a rare opportunity to own a great piece of motorcycle history. Available for sale is a completely restored 1940 Indian Chief. 1940 was a pivotal year for the Indian Chief. It was the first year the Chief was produced with full skirted fenders. It was also the first year for the use of rear plunger shocks. It was also the last year of the front leaf spring suspension on civilian motorcycles. Indian Chiefs were fast. For these reasons the 1940 Indian Chief is highly sought after.
Completely restored in 2001 only 500 miles have been clocked on the odometer since then and as a rebuild, this motorcycle looks just as nice as the day it was completed. Painted in Indian Red and Fallon Brown this motorcycle was completely taken apart and rebuilt. Over the course of the restoration the following was done: The bike was taken down to bare metal, the gas tank seams were welded and pressure tested. The Gas Tank was lined with a two part epoxy to insure they never rust or leak. The frame and forks were stripped to metal then checked for cracks, and then powder coated. The rear shocks were stripped, checked for cracks, powder coated and new springs and bushings were installed. The wheels were stripped and the rims were polished and triple chrome plated. The hubs were stripped and updated with sealed bearings, new bushings and then powder coated. The wheels were re-laced with new stainless steel spokes and new tires. The brake drums were checked, cleaned and then painted with Epoxy high heat paint. The brake shoes were re-lined to new condition.
The motor has been completely rebuilt and upgraded to 80 cubic inch. All bearings and bushings are new. The pistons and rings are new. Fly wheel is made by S&S and has been mercury bladder balanced by ‘Balance Masters' in California. The carburetor is also new. The transmission gears, clutch, and primary chain are all new as well. All electrical components are new and feature correct original pattern wiring and the motorcycle retains its correct 6 volts system.
The motorcycle seat has been re-covered and the seat pan coated black. The Hand grips are new black rubber with the Indian Logo. There are foot board extenders for the passenger,
